About "Nearfield"

Nearfield

Nearfield?

Nearfield

Good sound, we believe, is not only a matter of specifications. It is about how a room is designed, how a material ages, how a piece of equipment sits within a life — and what all of that says about the person who chose it.

Listening is an intimate act. Building a high-end audio system takes years: of decisions, of compromises, of slowly understanding what you actually value. It reflects a person's sense of beauty, their priorities, their relationship with time and attention. And yet, for all that, writing about high-end audio has largely remained in the language of measurements and reviews — technical, comparative, transactional.

Nearfield is here to write about it differently. We are a Chinese-language publication focused on the design, aesthetics, and cultural context of high-end audio. We believe a piece of audio equipment deserves to be considered in a wider frame — where its form came from, how the space around it was conceived, what the philosophy behind its manufacture actually means, and how it eventually settles into the life of the person who listens. High-end audio has never quite been written about in the language of design and living. That is what Nearfield is here to change.

We are not a forum, and we are not a buying guide. We write about equipment, but we are more interested in the thinking and taste that surrounds it. Our readers are people who regard listening as a way of life — who care as much about the room as they do about what plays in it.

Why Nearfield?

In a recording studio, monitors are never placed in the corner of the room. They sit close — within a metre or two of the engineer's ears. This is nearfield listening: a deliberate proximity that lets the direct sound dominate, stripping away room reflections and environmental noise to reveal what the audio actually is.

It is a technical term. But we think it describes something larger.

To listen nearfield is to commit to closeness — to resist the spectacle of the showroom floor and instead sit down, lean in, and pay attention. To the design language of a piece of equipment. To the way a room breathes. To the aesthetic conviction behind a choice of material or form.

That is the disposition we write for. Not the overwhelmed bystander, but the person who pulls their chair a little closer.
